Starting a New Project - Megan Liz Smith

Starting a New Project

Whether you’re working alone, with a crew, for yourself or for a client, you need to know the answers to a few basic questions. It can help to write these down. I’m talking about the basic building blocks and central motivation for the shoot. These things should always stay top of mind.

It’s helpful to do this as if you were introducing yourself to a stranger at a dinner party, or explaining what your newest project is to a friend. The goal is to be clear and concise. Keep these answers to two sentences or less when you can. For budget and schedule questions be as thorough as possible.

The Questions

  1. What is it, and what is your role?
  2. When does it start
  3. When does it end
  4. What will your schedule be?
  5. When will the project be released?
  6. What is the budget
  7. What will my pay be
  8. Who is paying for it?
  9. Who is involved in making it?
  10. Who is it being made for?
  11. Why is it being made? And why are you making it?
